University of Cape Town experience

Writer's picture: pfunzofaithpfunzofaith

So on getting to varsity, the trip there was very new and scary, because I had never been outside of Limpopo on my own. But when i got to Cape Town I had my brother and his then fiance there. I stayed with my brother's then fiance for a little bit because when I applied to the school, I forgot to apply for the residence. But i did get the residence in the end.

The orientation was great but I did feel alone and out of place because most of the other people had gotten to know each other from res.

The first two years of UCT I was in a program called GEPS, which was a program for students that came from school that are considered disadvantaged schools. It was a nice way to transition from high to varsity, because we were a small group and it was easier to make friends. the way we were being taught was more in-depth than the main stream students.

Anyway what I wanted to focus on were the struggles and challenges of being in varsity and why it did not work out for me. So the biggest struggle I had was on which course or majors I wanted to do. I went from mathematics and biology, to mathematics and statistics and then finally mathematics and applied mathematics. I was really confused and indecisive about what I wanted to do.

My this was just do something in the sciences and you will be okay even if that's not what you wanted in life.

The best thing was that i made long life friendships that I still have till this day.

My awesome friends
It was the first uct chemist lab day

So going back to being a chef, I remember this other day when my friends and I were walking to the shops, we met this guys that were dressed in the chef's uniform and all I could think of at that time was "I wish I was going to culinary school". After that I used to tell my friends if they offered cooking classes as electives I would definitely be taking those.

In third year I moved to a res that I had to cook for myself and I loved it. Some of my friends and I that were staying at the same res, we used to get together for a little us time and the thing I remember and love the most was the cooking time and of course the insightful and intriguing conversations we had. At the same time 2014( which was my third year) I was going through a lot in silence.

There was family situation that was making just a little bit unstable and unhappy for most of that year. But i am so happy that I had my family and friends with me.

When it comes to the reason why UCT did not work out for me, there are so many but i was kicked out under academic exclusion, what this means is I did not have enough credits to move on to the next year.

After that I left UCT and did a late application to the next university, which I will be talking about in the next blog.
