Restuarant internship experience

Working at a restaurant for the first time was amazing and a dream come true. It was an interesting time and place to work at. The restaurant is an Asian inspired restaurant in Pretoria.

The people I worked with were nice people and friendly from the get go. They accepted us as the interns into their fold with no problem. They were of course like any other place people that would cross the line when I came to personal space and what was appropriate in the work place.

The head chef was nice enough but he did have his off day, more so towards the end of my internship it became more prevalent that he could go from 0 to 100 in a second.

I worked for both the main restaurant, which is they day to day customers and the banqueting for functions booked at the hotel the restaurant was attached to. The two experiences are completely different. The main restaurant you had a set recipe that you had to do day in and day out. But with banqueting we could come up with new recipes all the time.

The chef de banquette that was there was also way more chilled and understanding than the head chef. And the guys that worked under him did give us a lot of opportunities when it came to cooking and plating our food. They gave us a larger creative range and that is something I appreciated a lot.

I learnt a lot from both side and would not change it for anything in the world. But I will be doing myself a disservice if I did not talk about the gender differences that are in the kitchen, when are more so tossed to the side when it come to the hard work even though we trained the same way as the guys, but we are treated as being weak, this is of course applying to the place that I was working at. I felt like we were marginalized in the kitchen, only to do the salads and soups but nothing above that.

Hopefully this will change in the future and we will be given more opportunities as time goes by. I loved working and would love to do it again soon but finding a job is proving difficult but we push and hustle until in happens. Failing would be to give up before even trying.
