Confidence in the work place

For me confidence in my day to day life as always eluded me and I have found it have to stay confident but I keep trying every day. Some people just exude confidence the moment they walk into a room or meet new people. For some like me it’s an everyday struggle. Low self-esteem has plagued me every since I was young, mostly new to the fact that I am over weight and always thought people were making fun of me or would not want to be close to me. This is just one of my major insecurities.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t think I am ugly, I just thought the world saw me as ugly and beat myself up for it every day. But all of this was way worse when I was younger, now I am trying to find myself and little by little my confidence in life is coming back to me. The biggest thing that takes away our confidence is fear. The fear that people will hate me; that you are not smart enough; that everything you do is less than; the fear that no one will take you seriously; the fear of failure.

The fear for failure can bring out both the good and the bad out of people. The good being that, your fear to fail will make you work even harder; the bad being, your fear of failure makes you give up before you even try. The one thing you should never do is allow fear to control you and your dreams. Rather control your fear and let it help you push through and accomplish your dreams. I once read that ‘if your dream does not scare you, you are not dreaming big enough’.

Confidence can affect us everywhere we go in life, including our work place. If you are not confident in the work you are doing, it shows in your final work, this can also be seen in school as well. Lacking the confidence to take initiatives might just leave you in the same position for the rest of your working life or you being let go in a company if you are not adding value there. Being confident does not mean being rude or condescending to others. I lacked in this part when I was working and this was present in the feedback I got from the head chef of the restaurant I was working in. He said I could do the job perfectly but lacked in the abilities to lead, this was because I stayed quite too long and did not ask for advice nor take any initiatives in my work.

Being confident will help you become a good leader and also take more chance that may pay off in the end. There is a fine line between being confident and being egotistic, know the different so that you don’t end up unemployed or unemployable. Be confident enough to ask questions, to ask for opportunities when one opens up, be the one to open up an opportunity for yourself, learn from me being quite and not active will not get you anywhere be brave and smart.
